Twelve year-old Celia Ripple, swimming in the maximum number of events allowed at the Wisconsin State Championships at the University of Wisconsin's Natatorium in Madison on Feb. 26-28, earned awards in four of her individual events.
Competing in the girls 11-and-12 year-old age group, Ripple finished eighth in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 33.13 seconds, 13th in the 400-yard individual medley at 5 minutes, 12.52, 15th in the girls 200-yard breaststroke at 2:43.55 and 16th in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 29.77 seconds.
Ripple swam in a total of seven individual events and four relays over the two-and-a-half-day meet and posted personal best times in six of the seven individual events in which she competed.
"The fact that Celia placed in both sprint and distance events and not just in the same stroke goes to show what a complete swimmer she has become," coach Lindsey Gerszewski said. "Obviously breaststroke is what she swims best, but Celia is a dynamic swimmer with a great future ahead of her."
Ripple's time in the 50-yard breaststroke not only placed her eighth in state, but also earned her a spot on Wisconsin's Central Zone Team, which will compete against 13 other states during the month of August. Ripple is close to the Zone qualifying time in several other events that she swims and is expected to make those cuts during the spring and summer season.
