Feb. 15, 2010 | 0 comments

The Wauwatosa Hurricanes co-op swim team qualified for the WIAA State Swimming and Diving Championships in eight events. The state meet is Friday and Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Natatorium.

Marquette won its own sectional Saturday with 411 points, but the Hurricanes ran away with second, scoring 394 points, well ahead of third place.

"We had an outstanding meet," Hurricanes coach Russ Weigel said. "Everyone was on fire, the atmosphere was electric."

Junior Jake Shackelford led the way by winning two events at the Marquette Sectional at Schroeder on Saturday. He took first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 7 seconds and the 500 freestyle (4:59.00).

Senior Will Utech also won his event at the sectional, qualifying in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.72).

Senior Lance Mielke qualified in two events, setting a school record in the 100 free (49.42) and the 100 backstroke (53.16), earning All-State honors in the latter.

Junior Shawn Roll qualified in 1-meter diving (320.65 points).

The two school record-setting relay teams that qualified were the 200 free relay of Utech, junior Ethan Heinrich, sophomore Peter Hovel and junior Adam Lefevre (1:32.26) and the 200 medley relay of Mielke, Utech, Shackelford and Heinrich (1:40.03).

Records were set in the 200 medley relay, 100 fly, 100 free, 200 free relay and 100 backstroke.

Hovel didn't qualify for state, but he finished third in the 100 butterfly at sectionals, setting a school record with a time of 59.32 seconds.
