West, East girls win conference games

Trojans use defense; Raiders have big fourth quarter

Feb. 14, 2010 | 0 comments

Coming off their intra-city battle two nights before, the Wauwatosa West and Wauwatosa East girls basketball teams got back into conference action and came away with victories Friday.

They each went about it in different ways, however.

The Trojans held Greenfield (1-13, 1-16) to eight first-half points - holding the Hustlin' Hawks to only a free throw in the second quarter - and coasted to a 66-32 Woodland Conference victory at Greenfield.

The Red Raiders (2-9, 4-13) went into the fourth quarter at West Allis Hale trailing, 33-27, and exploded in the fourth period, 18-4, to win going away, 45-37, in Greater Metro Conference action.

The Trojans, who have really gotten their offense together in the past few weeks, ran off a 25-7 first-quarter advantage.

Their defense was even more impressive in the second quarter, holding a 14-1 advantage to take a 39-8 lead at halftime.

Tosa West coach Mike Pietrowiak has a deep team, so 11 players got on the scoreboard.

Point guard Jackie Glaser, who has found her jump shot in the last few weeks, once again led the way with 14 points, and Mariah Smith added 12, Molly Boyle 10 and Jessica Allemang seven.

But even more impressive was that four more players (Jenna Engel, Jenna Lahmann, Kasey Plonka and Eva Popp) added four points each, while Paige Soles (three), Ashley Ballinger (two) and Jessica Pike (two) rounded out the scoring.

Another impressive performance came from the free-throw line, as the Trojans sank 11 of 12 shots, a .917 success rate.

The Trojans (10-4, 13-5) - who played a nonconference game against Waukesha Catholic Memorial (7-4, 11-5) on Feb. 16 - travel to Greendale (10-4, 12-5) at 7:30 p.m. Friday to battle the Panthers for second place.

The Trojans have won five in a row and eight out of nine going into this week.

It would have been a disaster to lose to the Huskies (1-11, 1-17), but the Red Raiders' chances for victory weren't looking good after three quarters.

It was a tightly fought game for three periods, but the Red Raiders were outscored every quarter (12-8, 9-8 and 12-11) and trailed by six going into the final quarter.

But Tosa East went on an amazing 18-4 run in the final quarter to win by eight. Carly Herald scored eight points, while Cara Walls and Talisha Simpson added five apiece to spark the offense.

Tosa East pressed the Huskies full court and then switched to a man-to-man press when they got to half-court.

"We had several steals and finished with 11 steals, most of them leading to a basket or a free throw," Tosa East coach Rob Hamill said. "And we played through some adversity, besides."

Emily Ferger is out indefinitely after hurting her knee again in the loss to Tosa West. Cassie Osinski got into foul trouble early and missed most of the game, but sophomore Emily Jensen "maintained for us," Hamill said.

The Red Raiders might have been in the game earlier if they didn't have such a terrible night from the free-throw line, making only 10 of 23, a .435 percentage.

Only five Red Raiders got in the scoring column, led by Simpson with 15 points, followed by Walls and Herald, with 13 each. Buckets by Yolanda Coleman and Osinski were the only other Tosa East points.

The win came at a crucial time for Tosa East, snapping a seven-game losing streak.

The Red Raiders - who hosted Milwaukee Lutheran (3-7, 5-10) on Feb. 16 - have a stretch of three straight home games, hosting Menomonee Falls (2-9, 4-14) at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Whitefish Bay (6-5, 9-8) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
