I remember the feeling well. Up until last week, I had only felt it once in my life. The first time was 10 years ago.
I got a phone call from then Brookfield district athletic director Jerry Keyes. He told me to come down to SpartanFest at Wirth Park and pick up my youngest son, then a freshman at East. My son had been drinking.
It was like someone kicked me in the stomach, kicked me hard. It took my breath away.
Last week I found out that Wauwatosa East athletes Barett Powell and Larry Bradley and Milwaukee Vincent's Dezmond Gosa were each charged in Milwaukee County Children's Court on May 6 with two counts of attempted armed robbery and one count of false imprisonment.
I know about Bradley's controversial transfer to Tosa East from Vincent, but I don't really know the young man. His impact on the Red Raiders' season was minimal and I never sat down and had an in-depth conversation with him before he left the team the weekend of sectionals.
But when I heard Powell was allegedly involved in the incident, I got that terrible feeling once again, the same one I had when I got the call about my son.
I have had several conversations with Barett the past two years, including one 60-minute interview when he was named to the NOW All-Suburban Football team in the fall.
Powell, a wide receiver, was named co-offensive player of the year in the Greater Metro Conference and set a school record with 52 receptions. He also played basketball and was expected to start next season at forward.
People have said high school athletes think they can get away with things others can't. They think they are better than others.
When you consider the publicity high school athletes receive in the newspaper, on the Web and on television, and toss in the praise they receive from classmates, parents and boosters, you can see why some athletes might think that way.
When Powell goes up between three defenders to catch a touchdown pass, or Bradley hits a teammate with a behind-the-back pass for a fastbreak basket, they can do things that others cannot.
But remember, people put athletes on a pedestal; the athlete doesn't climb up there.
According to the police report, when officers responded to the call, they ordered Powell to come out of the house where the alleged armed robbery started. He was arrested in the front yard of the residence. He immediately started crying and said his life was over because he was supposed to attend college on an athletic scholarship, which would likely be taken away.
Powell's life is far from over, but, if the allegations are true, it has taken a nasty turn. But being an athlete has nothing to do with it.
