The Wauwatosa West girls soccer team is not having a fund-raiser to benefit the program this year.
Instead, they will be raising money in a fashionable way that will benefit breast cancer research instead.
When the Trojans come back from spring break and travel to Pewaukee to face the Pirates in a Woodland Conference match Tuesday, April 21, they will take part in one of several 'Go Pink!' high school matches throughout Wisconsin.
Area student-athletes are taking a stand against breast cancer with help from the foundation established by former Green Bay Packer LeRoy Butler, who heads up the LeRoy Butler Foundation which helps women who need assistance with breast cancer treatment. The initiative, called 'Go Pink!' will consist of 88 teams playing more than 50 league games. The foundation is aiming to raise $90,000 this season.
In an interview with the Kenosha News, Butler said he wanted to partner with soccer teams, in part, because the sport is steadily growing and it encompasses the entire state. He said he hopes to continue the initiative annually, and it could also include girls basketball teams across the state next year.
The Trojans will have a large following wearing special pink T-shirts that were designed by senior captains Pamela Ditscheit and Annie Tritschler. The pink shirts will have 'Tosa West Soccer' with a pink ribbon on the front and 'Go Pink!' with a soccer ball on the back.
The players will also carry the theme on the field as Pewaukee will wear pink and the Trojans will wear lime green shirts donated by the Butler Foundation.
Three pink soccer balls have been donated for the match. Each school will be allowed to keep one and the third one will be auctioned off.
The Trojans have already sold approximately 300 t-shirts at $12 each and there will be another 50 available at school next week and at the game. Soccer World, which made the shirts, will donate the profits back to Tosa West, and the Trojans in turn will write a check to the LeRoy Butler Foundation to go toward breast cancer research.
If all the shirts are sold, the Trojans will raise $4,200, not counting the proceeds from the pink soccer ball.
"We thought this would be a good year to give back," Tosa West coach Mike Parulski said. "Here is a way we will be able to do something good to fight cancer. The girls are excited because they can raise money by playing soccer and it goes to a good cause."
So stop by the high school or at the match in Pewaukee, and "Go Pink!" It's for a good cause.
