Wauwatosa East first-year coach Jake Wolter knew what to do when he had the ball in his hand as a star player for the Red Raiders in the '90s. Most important, he knew not to turn the ball over.
Wolter now has to get that point across to his Tosa East football team, which turned the ball over seven times in a 34-7 loss to Cudahy on Friday at Hart Park.
The Red Raiders had five interceptions and two fumbles in Wolter's head coaching debut, making the Packers' job a lot easier.
"The biggest factor was the seven turnovers," Wolter said. "No one will win a football game with that. The mistakes that we did make are correctable. We weren't overmatched physically.
"But we also didn't capitalize offensively. We had a couple nice drives, but couldn't punch it in. The defense played great. However, after we turned the ball over and the momentum swung, you could see it in our body language."
First-time quarterback starter Riley Poe struggled, overthrowing receivers several times.
"But in his defense a couple of the interceptions weren't his fault, as they were tipped, and another one came at the end of the half," Wolter said.
"They gave us a lot of opportunities, but we were just a little bit off."
Wide receivers Vince Cupertino and Shaquille Redding combined for five catches for 117 yards, an average of 23.4 yards per catch.
"Cupertino and Redding ran their routes well," Wolter said. "They were open all night."
Wolter knew depth would be an issue coming into this season and he started to see it affect his defense in the first game.
"We have to do things that we need to and get in better shape," he said. "We also have to find a few more bodies to spell some of these guys. That's our job as a coaching staff."
The Packers led 14-0 at intermission, 27-0 after three quarters and 34-0 in the final quarter before the Red Raiders got on the board. Running back Jumaane Brady scored on a five-yard run with 5 minutes, 50 seconds left to play.
Brady rushed for 59 yards in 12 carries, Cupertino had three catches for 72 yards and Redding had two for 45 yards. Poe was 8-for-25 for 153 yards, an average of 19.1 yards per completion.
Wolter got his first game as a head coach under his belt. Now he will be looking for his first victory.
"It was exciting. I had some nerves leading up to game time," he said. "But after that first play, that first hit, it was still football."
Tosa East will host Nicolet at 7 p.m. Friday at Hart Park.
