"You're never as good as you think you are, and you are never as bad as you think you are."
That's how Wauwatosa West coach Matt Good summarized the Trojans' 28-16 loss to Milwaukee Hamilton on Friday at home.
"We didn't execute consistently on offense," Good said. "Our defense played very well. But our offense wasn't consistent and that cost us in 10 pivotal plays. Heck, we ran 76 plays and that's a lot of plays."
The Trojans turned over the ball six times, making it a lot easier for the Wildcats.
"We have to coach our kids better in those key plays," Good said.
Good was impressed that Tosa West's defense didn't roll over after falling behind 15-0 after one quarter. He praised his defenders for their pursuit and their good alignment, keying in on defensive tackle Aaron Payne-Atkinson and linebacker Troy Festge.
"The defense played 72 plays, and many of them play special teams," Good said. "That means they were in the game for about 90 plays."
Quarterback shines
Milwaukee Hamilton quarterback Bobby Cieplewski gave the Trojans fits, completing 17 of 28 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns, two to LaShawn Goode.
Tosa West was trailing 15-0 when the Trojans scored twice on a 5-yard touchdown catch by sophomore wide receiver Mickey Morgan from quarterback Colin Dettlaff and on a safety by Troy Festge to go into halftime trailing only 15-9.
"Mickey was open all night," Good said. "They had no answer for him. But we struggled to make the reads. Both quarterbacks - Dettlaff and Josh Stoeckman - had that deer-in-the-headlights look. The game is much faster on Friday night, especially when it is your first varsity game."
Cieplewski threw his second touchdown to Goode and then scored on a short keeper play for a 29-9 lead after three quarters, before Tosa West closed out the scoring with a 2-yard run by Stoeckman.
Senior Oliver Jones had six catches for 50 yards, while junior Amari Rushing and senior Harry Ostrenga had 41 and 40 yards rushing, respectively. Dettlaff was 10-for-21 for 87 yards and Stoeckman was 3-for-7 for 57 yards.
Next game
The Trojans will jump right into the Woodland Conference season Saturday looking for better results.
The Trojans (0-1) will hit the road to face St. Thomas More (0-1) for a 1 p.m. game at St. Francis High School. The Cavaliers lost at Southern Door, 48-9, in their opener Friday. They scored on a 32-yard field goal by Antonio Reyes and a 3-yard touchdown run by Pascual Rodriguez.
St. Thomas More was fourth (2-6, 2-7 overall) in the Blue Division last year and has not had a winning season since 2005 (9-2).
In six meetings over the last eight years, St. Thomas More has beaten Tosa West each time; the average score was 32-9.
Good said he is looking at Saturday's game to see how much his team has improved from game one to game two.
