Schmidt-Bartelt/Catalano Produce regains crown

Win leads to team's 7th title in 8 years

Sept. 1, 2010 | 0 comments

Last year, 15th-seeded Bethany/Calgary upset Schmidt-Bartelt/Catalano Produce, 8-1, in a driving rainstorm and snapped their string of seven straight Wauwatosa Recreation Men's City Softball Tournament championships.

Schmidt-Bartelt/Catalano Produce wasn't going to let this one slip away this season.

Schmidt-Bartelt/Catalano Produce, the second seed in the tournament, met 21st-seeded Leff's Lucky Town (Collentine) in the title game Aug. 25 and used a nine-run first inning to coast to a 14-1 win and recaptured their crown.

Winning pitcher Tony Catalano allowed Leff's Lucky Town just six hits, their lone run coming from leftfielder DJ Long's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

But Schmidt-Bartelt/Catalano Produce belted out a total of 18 hits in their rout as Kevin Kazmarek, Dave Pangallo and Don Devine combined to go 10 for 15 to lead the team to their seventh title in the last eight years.

Schmidt-Bartelt/Catalano Produce beat sixth-seeded LT, 3-2, in the second semifinal game, while Leff's Lucky Town made it to the title game by upsetting No. 1-seed Vince Ingrelli Plumbing, 9-7, in the first semifinal of the night.

Schmidt-Bartelt/Catalano Produce and Vince Ingrelli Plumbing tied for first in the Thursday Men's A League with 10.5-3.5 records, but the latter won the tie-breaker for the title.

Leff's Lucky Town (Collentine) finished tied for second in the Tuesday Men's Open with Club Tap, but lost the tie-breaker.
