Zoom zoom West off to fast 3-0 start
Kickers topple Arrowhead, last year's season-ender
Wauwatosa West first-year coach Ryan Bailey has his Trojans off and running.
Tosa West opened the year with three straight victories, defeating Arrowhead on Aug. 19 and Germantown on Aug. 21 on the road, then beginning this week with a win over Whitnall on Monday at home in the Woodland Conference opener.
Whitnall
"We did not get off to a great start and it hurt us almost immediately," Bailey said.
The Falcons scored in the first eight minutes. Bailey said the Trojans did not come out with the intensity they had in the first two matches.
"It is something we need to change," he said.
Joel Zembles and Patrick McDowell scored to take a 2-1 lead, but Whitnall scored to go into intermission tied at 2-2.
"We again, however, lost focus and let Whitnall get back even before half," Bailey said. "In the second half the game became wide open and we could not convert the chances we created."
In the closing minutes Nico Zabala was able to break through off of a kick from Kyle Heideman and netted the winner.
"Whitnall is a very hard-working team," Bailey said. "They never allow anything to come easy. Because we did not match their intensity, they gave us many problems for 80 minutes. They will be a thorn in the side for many teams in the Woodland."
Germantown
Against the Warhawks on Aug. 21 Evan Carlin converted a penalty for a 1-0 lead until the 55th minute, when Germantown was able to generate an attack.
The Trojans scored in the 76th minute to win the game as Mark Hewett made a special run into the box, kept his composure as he beat his defender and slotted a ball for an easy finish for Erik Garncarz.
"Our back four of Patrick McDowell, Dan Bruckner, Dan Schneck and Travis Heyer played all but four minutes combined in this match," Bailey said. "Travis had come off the bench in the fourth minute and played great for the next 76 minutes without a change."
Arrowhead
In the season opener Aug. 19 the Trojans beat Arrowhead, the team that knocked them out of the postseason last year.
"The boys asked to play them this year, and we thought it would be a great way to kick off the year," Bailey said. "We went down 1-0 in the first half when we got caught ball-watching. That was one of our only defensive mistakes."
Tosa West tied the score on a great run by Carlin. He was able to spin his defender, split the defense and slot a ball back post for Zabala to tap it in.
It was 1-1 at halftime before Carlin caused more problems for the Arrowhead defense. He beat his defender in the box and was able to draw a penalty. He converted it for the winning goal.
"From front to back, we were organized and gave up very few dangerous chances," Bailey said. "Our bench also stepped up and played a ton of key minutes."
