It was a week that the Wauwatosa East boys soccer team would rather forget.
The Red Raiders lost their Greater Metro Conference opener at Brookfield Central on Aug. 24, lost at Hartford on Aug. 26 and lost to Madison West on Saturday at home, managing to score one goal in the three games.
Brookfield Central
The Raiders opened the GMC schedule with a 2-0 loss at Central.
Tosa East had a chance to score twice in the first 10 minutes but couldn't convert. After receiving a direct free kick opportunity from 20 yards out, Jackson Orin drilled a shot that caromed off the crossbar in the eighth minute. Minutes later sophomore Ben Carpenter broke free and had a good shot pushed aside by Lancer goalkeeper Tim Garvey.
The Lancers scored in the 20th minute on a goal by Danny Wheaton on a cross by midfielder Amir Alwan. The Raiders found themselves playing catch-up the rest of the way.
In the second half the difference maker came in the 64th minute when Central striker Nick Cianciolo beat the East defense with some speed and footwork and slid a far-post shot past East keeper Kyle Mabie.
"I was pleased with our effort, but it's clear the boys wanted a better result," Tosa East coach Eric Dale said. "If they learned anything, it's that they must be more opportunistic. Good teams can possess, but great teams make the most of their chances at goal."
Hartford Union
Last year's state qualifier Hartford put a hurt on Tosa East at Gib Mahr Field last Thursday, beating them 5-1.
The state's all-time leading scorer, James Weber, showcased his wares all evening; it seemed he scored or created scoring opportunities every time he possessed the ball.
"It was humbling for us to see such a strong, fast and skilled striker," Dale saidWeber scored the Orioles' first three goals of the match in the sixth, 37th and 42nd minutes. East midfielder Bobby Russ scored on a penalty kick in the 62nd minute.
But only one minute later, Weber scored his fourth goal of the match and Hartford tallied the final goal in the 78th minute.
Madison West
The Red Raiders lost a 4-0 decision to the Regents on Saturday morning at Whitman Field.
Regent forward Jimmy Stork scored on an assist from Arthur Herlitzka in the 19th minute and it crushed Tosa East mentally, Dale said.
West scored in the 30th minute for a 2-0 lead at intermission and then added second-half goals in the 43rd and 54th minutes to round out the scoring.
"It's already been a roller coaster ride this season," Dale said of the teams' four wins followed by three losses. "We'll keep working and build ourselves up. Our defense must be more firm and resilient and our front six must start scoring."
The Red Raiders, who played Brookfield East on Tuesday, will face Marquette on Sept. 8 and Wauwatosa West on Sept. 11, will have to get their act together quickly.
"We have no time for self-pity," Dale said.
"We've already reached a pivotal point in the season and I'm anxious to see how our team responds to setbacks like this."
