It was a light week for the Wauwatosa East girls volleyball team as they compiled a 1-3 record in the Riverside Invitational on Aug. 25, their only action.
The Red Raiders lost to Pius (25-17, 25-16), Burlington (25-6, 25-18) and Greenfield (25-10, 25-19) and beat Shorewood (25-16, 17-25, 15-13).
"For the first tournament of the season, I was pretty happy," coach Mary Olks said. "To my surprise, we excelled in some areas that I thought were going to be trouble for us this season - like our defense and blocking."
Olks was impressed with the competition.
"The first game against Pius was pretty good. I feel we played with them for a while; they always are strong. Burlington, I believe, is the No. 1 team in the state in our preseason poll. We obviously didn't play well the first game, but hung with them all through the second.
"At one time I looked at the score and it was tied 17-17, not too bad. However, teams like Burlington know how to win and the last few points came fast. But I was still proud of our overall performance."
Olks praised Caylee Herald and Devin Kunda.
"Caylee and Devin were outstanding in the back row, picking up an average of seven digs per game," she said. "They are really stepping up for their senior year."
Hitting and blocking still need work, Olks said.
"We have a lot of young, inexperienced players, but for the most part they are coming along. … We just need to work and push ourselves everyday in practice and get the girls the experience on the court. I am very optimistic about this season."
