Girls golf: Herald, Lee to lead Tosa linksters

Aug. 25, 2010 | 0 comments

Seniors Carly Herald and Mary Lee will lead this year's Wauwatosa East/West co-op team, which will be under the direction of Leah Gustafson, last year's assistant coach.

Junior Martha Schuster will also return to the varsity team along with juniors Livi Crego and Madalyn Joannes, who both played a few meets at the varsity level last year.

At the JV level Tosa has returning players juniors Angela Gilman, Alie Knauss and sophomore Caitlan Cavanaugh. Some of the more promising newcomers include freshmen Jenna Lake and Sara Wollemann, both of whom have varsity potential. The other freshmen include Molly Lippold, Cassie McMurphy, Olivia Schertz and Dori Cloran.

"Carly and Mary Lee can certainly compete with the best individual players in our conference," Gustafson said. "Martha, Livi and Madalyn have really improved their games over the summer. We're optimistic for a strong year. Although it's early in the season, it's pretty obvious that one or two strokes will be the difference between third and fifth place in our conference mini-meets. We just have so many teams that are playing at the same level."

Gustafson feels her squad can finish in the top half of a very tough Greater Metro Conference.

"We've got a great bunch of girls who are willing to work hard and are enthusiastic about the game," she said. "If they keep playing the way they have and remain positive out on the course, I feel we can place in the top half of our conference throughout the season."
