More students living elsewhere want in

March 10, 2010 | 0 comments

A total of 1,412 students from 18 school districts applied to attend Wauwatosa School District schools for the 2010-11 academic year through the state's Open Enrollment program. That's up from 1,157 last year.

Almost all of the applications came from students in the Milwaukee Public Schools district, Therese Kwiatkowski, director of student services, said in a presentation to the School Board on Monday. Just less than half of the students hoping to attend Tosa schools applied for the elementary level.

The program's enrollment period ended Feb. 19.

Open Enrollment is a statewide program that allows students to attend school outside their home district. Those home districts pay Wauwatosa about $6,500 per student.

Currently, 1,125 students attend Wauwatosa through Open Enrollment, accounting for $7.3 million in revenue to the district.

In November, School Board members set maximum class sizes for 2010-11 at 18 students in kindergarten, 20 students in grades one to five, and 23 students in core areas. The number of Open Enrollment students admitted to the district will be based on these class sizes.

Eighty-seven Wauwatosa students are seeking to attend school elsewhere.
