Condos at 68th and Wells lousy prospect for city

Jan. 20, 2010 | 0 comments

Public Forum:

The condo plans for 68th and Wells are once again entertaining the city with their big ideas. After seeing the headline, "Condos at 68th and Wells fail to win panel's endorsement" in the Jan. 14 issue, I was sorry to read that "several commissioners encouraged the developers not to give up, calling the vacant building on the site an eyesore that they are anxious to see replaced."

That corner has many similarities to the Swan Boulevard and North Avenue corner. It's in the middle of both a residential and business area, close to a school and has a high traffic volume that is used as a direct route to a freeway. Swan Boulevard and North Avenue also has condos/storefronts sitting on its corner, and guess what ... there is still one condo available!

With this being an election year, I would encourage Dennis McBride (although not up for re-election) and Jill Organ (running unopposed) to take a walk in that area and poll the residents and business owners before the next meeting, at 8 p.m. Jan. 26.

I am born and bred Wauwatosa and grew up two blocks away from that corner. How about a nice friendly little public parking lot? It's flat, so it won't overshadow the beautiful existing architecture of the neighborhood, and it would alleviate the oftentimes huge traffic jams that result when drivers look for available street parking so they can patronize area businesses. It's too late for Swan Boulevard and North Avenue; let's not make the same mistake twice.
