Fire chief says it's time to move on
With new fire station built, Redman seeks new challenges
With the opening of the city's new fire station on Underwood Avenue crowning a career in Wauwatosa that has spanned nearly 14 years, Fire Chief Dean Redman has decided he has done pretty much everything he set out to do since he first arrived here from Rockford, Ill.
He has played a key role in improving the working relationship between firefighters and management.
He removed barriers that blocked women from becoming firefighters, hiring eight females during his tenure.
He helped improve the efficiency of the department's emergency medical services program.
And, for the last couple of years, he oversaw construction of the new $11 million Fire Station No. 1.
"There are no real objectives that I have out there right now or things that need to get accomplished," Redman said.
And that - quite simply - is why Redman announced this week that he will be retiring in January and moving to North Carolina.
Leaving to volunteer
He and his wife, Marcia, are headed south to be closer to family and to take key volunteer positions with Call To Be Family, an international faith-based organization designed to strengthen the relationships between husbands and wives.
"I really had intentions of leaving sometime ago, and a couple of years ago I was ready to leave," said the 63-year-old. "Then we started building the fire station and got a lot of encouragement from the administrative staff to stick that around and see it through. And I did that."
Now, he said, it's time to move on.
"Wauwatosa is a wonderful community, as anyone who lives here knows," he said. "It's a fantastic place to live. It's going to be something to miss when we move away."
Proud of department
In looking back at his career in Tosa, Redman said he is most proud of the high level of service that the department has consistently provided and positive feedback its members have received from the community.
"When I came here, the relationship in the Fire Department had been somewhat contentious over a period of time," he said. "But the one thing I never had to worry about was quality of service provided to residents.
"When they go out and meet the public and provide a service, it's always with the highest level of professionalism. … Not enough can be said of the pride in service that the people in this department have."
