Magpie celebrates gem of a 10th anniversary
Custom metalwork still in demand

Later this month, Magpie Jewelry and Metals Studio will celebrate its 10th anniversary - no ordinary feat for any company in the present economy, much less a small business.
What's helped the Wauwatosa-based jeweler succeed, according to Terese Millmann, one of its owners, has been its varied inventory of customized products, versatility and a wide range of pricing options.
Unique and inherited
"Some chain jewelers don't last because they only stock premade jewelry," said Millmann, whose partners include fellow metalsmiths Christopher M. Stephens and Kristen Fogtman-Faust. "We're busy because our business is custom - we design one of a kind pieces. We've also developed a reputation for keeping jewelry alive. Magpie recycles old and inherited jewelry, and much of our business involves alterations and repair work - something that a chain jeweler can't - or won't - do.
"We've also found over the past few years that even though we've experienced a decrease in walk-up sales, consumers still want jewelry. In response, we offer more low-priced items - pieces for any occasion, not just for special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries and weddings."
Variety of styles
With a combined 58 years of metalsmithing experience among its partners, Magpie produces gold, silver and platinum jewelry in styles such as architectural, organic and retro.Magpie can employ the ancient Japanese blacksmithing technique of Mokume gane as well as reticulation, a process by which metal is manipulated to draw itself into ridges and valleys.
Magpie also specializes in working with unique and unusually colored gemstones and engraved, carved and cast jewelry.
The store, which doubles as studio space, represents featured artist Ann Marie Cianciolo and more than 15 local and national consignment artists, including jewelers, painters, photographers and sculptors.
"We're very fortunate to have a network of talented people to work with," Millmann said. "Showcasing other artists' work gives life to our studio. It enables us to offer a wider range of items than we could otherwise produce."
Magpie will mark its decade of operation with an open house Sept. 17 and 18.
