Sewer backup victims join Facebook

Carrie McKenzie is frustrated and angry over sewage that has backed up into her Wauwatosa basement four times over the past three years.
She's taken to the Internet in an effort to demand answers from government agencies, including the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District.
McKenzie has established a Facebook page, Hold MMSD Accountable for Basement Backups, to bring fellow sufferers together and, she hopes, to find a solution for backups that have plagued them more and more frequently in recent years.
"I can't even describe the level of frustration. Flooding I get - water happens - but sewage bubbling up like the bubbler at the park through the drain in your basement shouldn't happen to anybody," she said.
Her first instinct was to write a blog about her experiences just to vent, but then she considered the social media she uses to stay in touch with friends and family and how it would help her find others in the same predicament.
"How can I get us talking and sharing our experiences in a way that's very easy for people to share?" she asked herself before deciding to create the Facebook page. What started with six of her friends has grown to 120 members as of Wednesday. McKenzie got a boost from publicizing the page on the Facebook sites of local TV stations.
The stories people are sharing range from "I'm mad about this, and I want to do something," to "I'm just so glad there are other people out there who feel the same way."
"There has even been advice on how to get rid of mold and what to be worried about," McKenzie said. "It started as part catharsis, and it's turned into activism. I'm hoping we can turn it into something more and use this as one of many ways to get people working together on what's wrong and what can be done to fix it."
Comments have been critical of MMSD and several municipalities, but the bulk of comments lament money wasted finishing basements that were contaminated and express fear and anxiety over potential health risks resulting from the sewage and mold.
MMSD spokesman Steve Jacquart said the district has no comment on the page or its contents.
What does McKenzie hope to accomplish with the page in the end?
"A solution - we just need the problem to be fixed," she said. "I don't even mind paying more taxes if you fix the problem."

Just an FYI - Wauwatosa sewers backed up into her basement, not MMSD sewers. Any the Tosa sewers backed up because too much rain water is getting into sanitary sewers - mainly from leaking lateral. But I'm sure it's fun to have a Facebook page where sewer and hydraulics "experts" can get together and discuss.
