School heads get raises

Nonunion workers receive bump, too

Aug. 25, 2010 | 6 comments

The Wauwatosa School Board on Monday approved increases in total compensation - including a bump in health insurance - for Superintendent Phil Ertl, administrators and the district's nonunion employees.

Ertl will receive a 3.5 percent increase in total compensation in the 2010-11 school year, bringing his salary to $157,440 plus benefits valued at $56,298.

Increases of 3 percent are planned for the district's administrators and nonunion employees.

School Board member Mary Jo Randall said she was pleased the increases could be granted, and credited it to "the hard work going on at every level of the district."

She said the decision to give Ertl a raise resulted from an annual comprehensive evaluation looking at areas such as planning, instructional leadership and communications.

"It's not an automatic," she said. "It is looked at very carefully."

The board also looked at superintendent salaries from comparable districts, board member Mike Meier said.

Collaboration cited

He credits Ertl with creating a culture of collaboration with his directors of student learning, business services and human resources. As a team they have done the research and planning to bring language program to grades kindergarten through eight, implement engineering curriculum Project Lead the Way and restructure the middle school schedule that should result in efficiencies.

"The district is on the verge of some very significant improvements," Meier said.

Randall says the district can afford the increases.

"We are working within our budget parameters, we are not overspending with these changes," she said.

Less than teachers union

By comparison, the School Board in December approved a new contract with the teachers union that called for a 4.76 percent increase in pay and benefits for the 2009-10 school year and a 4.25 percent increase in 2010-11.

Under that contract, salaries increased by 3.33 percent and benefits increased by 1.43 percent in 2009-10. In 2010-11, salaries will increase 2.14 percent, with benefits increasing 2.11 percent.

  3. I didn't get an increase last year, why would you move to give an increase this year for last year?
Maybe the district ought to reconsider some of the teachers? Retire the old, less enthusiastic teachers and hire the young fresh idea teachers.
  4. Those raises for teachers seem excessive. Social Security recipients are not getting any increases. Is it necessary to offer 9% over two years to retain the good teachers? Will they be moving to MPS if they don't get 9%?
  5. So let me get this straight. The district is threatened with a loss of about
11% in matching state aid for this upcoming school year, the overall
economy is in the tank with somewhere north of 10% of the population out
of work, my property taxes might get raised (according to a trial balloon
floated out in front of the school board back in May of this year), and yet I
am supposed to believe Mary Jo Randall when she says "we can afford it"?
It would be nice if the reporter would have gotten some facts to support this
claim. Otherwise it is just another example of out-of-control spending during
a time when fiscal responsibility is key. Wouldn't it be a refreshing change of
pace if our leaders actually led by example and agreed to a pay freeze? I
know that there isn't much that can be done with WEAC and the union, but
unless Ertl and the administrators are part of that group, why increase the
pay? It's not like those of us out here in the private sector (who are still
lucky enough to hold onto our jobs) are getting raises.
  6. "Randall says the district can afford the increases."

Really? Then why did you guys propose raising my taxes a few months ago?
